A fun experience
My hallicrafters SC-40B, 1950 vintage, suddenly became halted and not working.  I have never repaired a receiver, both tube and solide state.
I got hold of Perry on echoLink, K9FHJ, my radio mentor and a close friend.  I asked him what to do and asked him to give me the general steps to repair the tube receiver.
(1) Take the chassis out from the box and take a careful look at the receiver and switch on. Observe if anything not right and strange thing happening such as funny noise and no tube heater lighted, etc.
(2) Then, Start working on the final stage of tube, audio amp stage.   Use a screw driver and touch the signal coming in grid to ground.  When this stage is working, you will hear some noise from the speaker.  Continue this operation toward the first  RF signal receiving stage.  That is working a kind of backward. 
(3) If no noise heard on a tube you tested, then check the voltage on the plate of the tube with a volt/amp meter.  The voltage needs to have a specified level.
As I have not repaired receivers before, this three steps are good enough where to start.  I asked him if any futher check is needed, I said I would get hold of him.
I followed the steps he gave me described above and found the first I.F. stage tube, 6SK7, was not functioning.  To be exact the heater for 6.3V was not lighted.  I got a new tube from my radio friend, Frank, VE3FBH in town.   I replaced with a new  6SK7, then the receiver started working. 
As you can imagine, my first atempt for repair of receiver was very much successful and I was very excited and felt so great.   I have made the first QSO after repair on July 12 with K4RGR receiving his signal with my SC-40B.

7月に入り、私の1950年代の受信機、ハリクラフタ―ズ SC-40B,が故障してしまいました。 私は受信機の修理などはした経験がなく、どこから手をつけていいかわからず、私のラジオの先生で、私の親友のペリー K9FHJ,にエコーリンクで修理方法を教えてもらいました。
(1)ラジオのシャーシーを箱から取り出し、電気を入れ、よく観察します。 異常や、匂い、電気がつかなかったり、故障に関係のありそうなところを注意深く、チェックし、観察します。
(2)スピーカーの音を出す最終段の真空管の入力の信号が入る、グリッドの足をねじ回しなどでアースし、触ってみます。 この時、正常であれば、ざーと言う音がスピーカーから聞こえます。 このステップを、第一段RF、つまり、受信した信号を処理する真空管に向かって、一段、一段真空管をチェックします。
ペリーにはここまで、教えてもらい、作業に入りました。  その結果、第1段I.F.の6SK7真空管のヒーター(6.3V)が断線しているのを確かめ、新しい6SK7を私の近所のVE3FBH フランクから分けていただき、差し替えました。  
受信機は、気のせいでしょうが、前よりよく信号が聞き取れるようなり、修理後の初めてのQSOは7月12日 K4RGRと出来ました。 また、自分で修理できた満足感で、気分よく、使っています。
