“The Soldering Iron Temperature Controller”


I am challenging to work on the Surface Mount Device (SMD) kit some day, hopefully by the end of this year.  I need to have a temperature controller for my soldering iron to work with.  I have two soldering irons from Tokyo where the AC voltage is 100 volts and 60 cycles.  The soldering iron is used with AC 115 volts instead of AC 100V , and it seems to give me more high heat and become more hot on the iron tip.  I decided to make a soldering iron temperature controller so that I will do a nice job.


I read the ARRL handbook, 1995 issue and made a schematic to meet my requirement.  The controller will achieve:  (1) The soldering iron will stay about 50% of the working temperature while idling.  (2) The temperature on the tip can be set for the preferred temperature by the dimmer.  (3) It will light a LED when it is switched on.


The schematic will be available upon request by e-mail.  The cost of the controller was about $12 (a dimmer, a box, a receptacle and a face plate) and the rest such as two switches, a LED etc. were supplied from my junk box.

The performance:

(1)   The soldering iron can run and work better due to setting the right temperature.

(2)   I like the idling provision on the controller so the work can be done for less amount of time for full heat when the sub switch is back on. 

(3)   The temperature controller can be built cheap enough and worth spending a few dollars.  A commercial soldering station, if I buy, can be $40 to $60 so I saved a couple of dollars there and get a right tool for my soldering work.


I recommend, if you do homebrewings and kit building, you should think about making one for yourself.  The job can be done more comfortably and easily.

私は東京から持ってきた半田ごて(100 ボルト用)が2本あり、最近の小さい部品を半田付けする時、こちらの115 ボルトで使うと、高い熱で、少し不自由を感じる時があります。 ARRLハンドブック1995年度版を参考に、半田ごての温度コントローラーを作ることにしました。



(1)   こてを使ってない時は、約50%の熱しか出せないようにサブスイッチがあります。 

(2)   ディマー(dimmer)を使い、こての温度を設定し、仕事がやりやすいようにで出来ます。

(3)   LEDが赤く点灯し、温度コントローラーに電気が入っていることを目で確かめられます。


電気屋さんから買った材料は1200円くらいかかりました、残りは手持ちの物を使い組み立てました。 出来合いの物を買うと、約5000円くらいかかり、自分で作れば、費用も安く、自分の気に入るようにデザインし、作り上げることができ、使っていても気分がいいです。 私が造った温度コントローラーの配線図が欲しい人は、メールをください。 これから、冬に向け、私の冬のプロジェクトに使えると思います。  温度コントローラーの写真はこのブログのアルバム、2007108日のところで見られます。
