A 6L6 QRP CW transmitter (1941yr)

“A 6L6 QRP CW transmitter”

 

I came across a homebrew project shown at the page of 138 in the 1941 ARRL handbook a couple of years ago.  I have been trying to line up the parts because I wanted to build it with the 1941year original parts and the way it was built shown in the handbook as much as possible.

 

The parts that were hard to get are as follows:

(1) The air variable capacitor:　　In the book the National STH250 was used but I got a Hammarlund variable capacitor from VA3AWA, Lou, but it is old one equivalent to STH250 and he polished it up for his project.  He kindly gave it to me.

(2) 6L6 metal tube:  VE3FBH, Frank, happened to have a new tube and when I got it from him, I decided to go ahead seriously to build this transmitter.  Thanks Frank.

(3) A Bliley type Xtal:  I knew I could get one but also I knew it would be difficult.  W8WLQ, Les, gave me one for 40m band.  Thanks Les for saving lots time for me.

 

I lined up the rest of parts such as sockets, coil, fasteners etc. as much as and as much close as possible shown in the handbook including the parts layout.

 

In those days the number of parts used was generally less and relatively simple diagram.  I finished the transmitter before the Christmas, 2006 and have made my first QSO with N9DFN, Dave, with 579. 

 

I was excited for the QSO and I was happy with the transmitter shown in the 1941 ARRL handbook.  It was published 65 years ago and it did work well.

私の手元に昭和16年出版のARRLのラジオハンドブックがあります。　この中に6L6メタル管1本のCW　QRP送信機があり、配線図も簡単で、できるだけ当時の部品で、当時の組み立て方を守って1台組んでみたいと思っていました。　古い部品を集めるのは大変でしたが、幸い、下記の主な部品が手に入ったので、考え始めてから、2年かけて、ようやく組み上げ、QSOもでき、完成しました。

 

手に入れるのが難しかった部品：

（１）   バリコン：　本にはナショナル　STH250は使われていましたが、ハマランドの当時のバリコンをVA3AWA　ルー　よりいただきました。　これは彼が使う予定で、しっかりぴかぴかに磨き上げていた物でしたので、いただいて本当に感謝しています。

（２）   6L6　メタル管：　メタル真空管は1940年代、1950年代に使われていました。　偶然　VE3FBH　フランクより、新しい真空管を譲っていただき、この送信機の当時の古い部品を全部揃えられる自信がわき、それからは真剣に、部品を揃え始めました。　フランクにはいつも、助けてもらっています。　本当に有難う。

（３）   BLILEY社製のクリスタル：　この薄い丸い円筒形のクリスタルは、時間をかければ手に入ると思っていましたが、W9WLQ　レス　より、偶然いただけました。　７Mhzの波を出すクリスタルで、本にある周波数でした。　レスに有難うと言いたいです。

 

その他に細かな部品はVA3AWA　ルーに聞きながら、手に入る方法と、場所を教えてもらったり、当時、行われていた組み立て方で、組んでみました。　昔の送信機は、部品点数も少なく、回路も簡単で、組むのには時間は余りかかりませんでした。

 

出来上がって初めてのQSOはN9DFNとテストを兼ね行いました。　RST　579で出力は3Wでました。　　6L6は結構パワーが出る球と思いました。　今から65年も前の配線図で送信機を組み、それを使ってオンエア―すると一味違う面白さが経験できて、うれしかったです。　この送信機は、飾っておく置物としても良い様に、よく仕上げましたので、私のシャックにおいて置きます。
